How To Make A Wooden Toy Box

We recently made this wooden toy box for our youngest grandson. My husband Phillip did all of the woodwork, and I did the stain and poly. I will go over all the steps we followed in making this wooden toy box below the video.

*Note- I should have mentioned in the video that I still had one more coat of polyurethane to apply.

Start With Good Wood

The wood you choose is very important. If you are planning on staining it as we did, then you will want to use good quality plywood. We used Birch. The cheaper plywood will have scratches, glue, or imperfections that may not show up until you start staining.

If you are going to paint your toy box, then you will be able to use slightly cheaper plywood, knowing that any imperfections will be covered by paint. However, you do need to keep in mind that rougher surface plywood is still going to show imperfections, even if you paint.

Draw It Out

After you have chosen your plywood, the next step will be to measure your dimensions out onto your plywood. I’ve added the measurements we used to make ours at the bottom of this post. Of course, you can modify this to suit your preference.

Stain or Paint

We chose to stain our piece, but you could easily paint it as well. The stain we chose was Minwax brand. You can get it here.

Below are a few pictures of the finished product.

The 1″ x 1.5 ” trim is around the opening and the upper shelf.
Nice and deep for all those toys

The edges of the trim boards were smoothed down on the sander where they met the other boards so they would fit properly.

The 1″ x 3.5″ trim is at the bottom.

Plywood piece added to the top and also to the bottom.
